I celebrate Christmas and Yule, and New Years. No, I'm not a Christian, but I celebrate Christmas anyway. Some people ask me why, and for me, it's because Christmas is about more than the birth of Christ (regardless of the fact that he wasn't born in December, but I won't get into that). For me, it's about family, traditions, giving of yourself to others. Peace on Earth, Goodwill to Men. I love the traditions, the songs, the decorations, the food (dear Goddess I love the food!)... I love spending time with family, and finding the perfect gift that will make someone's face light up.
Being a Wiccan, I also celebrate Yule. It's the time when the darkness begins to wane, and the sun is reborn. (Sun is born, Son is born... coincidence? Yea right... Oops, sry lol) Much like with Christmas, it's a time to be together with loved ones, sharing light and warmth at a time of greatest darkness. I watch the stars, and light candles, and put up a Yule tree (my tree pulls double duty, lol). Having no fireplace, I have to skip the Yule log for now, but someday I'll get one.
If you think the two holidays sound similar, there's a reason for that. I'm ashamed to admit that some Wiccans choose to bash Christmas, and Christians - "They stole our holiday!" This statement is ridiculous, in my opinion. You can't "steal" a holiday. If you want to celebrate, do it, no one is stopping you in this century. Have some (okay, many) Yule traditions been borrowed for Christmas? Yes, but look at the history of ALL Christian holidays. They've borrowed from everyone and everything. And that's okay with me. It just means our traditions were so great, people didn't want to let go of them! I say take it as a complement, shut up, and drink some damn eggnog! *gets off soapbox*
I also celebrate New Year's. It's a great time to look back at the past year, the joys and sorrows, accomplishments and setbacks, friends lost and friends made. And it's a time to reset the clock, so to speak, to make a fresh start. I usually make a resolution (lose weight); whether I keep it or not hardly even matters. I also enjoy my New Year's lobster (a family tradition), and watch the ball drop in NYC (from the comfort of my living room). Dick Clark will grace my tv screen for one more year (is he a cyborg? I mean seriously the guy's like 1000!) and I'll promptly crash at about 1:30.
I don't really celebrate the holidays all that seperately, though. From Thanksgiving on, it's all about the holly jolly holidays, straight through until January 2nd. When I wake up with one HELL of a headache, lol. That reminds me, I need to stock up on Advil...
Happy Holidays! =D
